Program Description:
The Salama Hub Program is the American Friends Service Committee, AFSC, Advocacy and Policy Program for the Horn of Africa. The goal of this program is to ensure that African civil societies and Faith-Based Organizations interact efficiently with institutional stakeholders in Africa and beyond in protection of human rights, peace, and stability in the Horn of Africa region. Under direct supervision of the Salama hub Program Coordinator, the program assistant is responsible for the coordination of project activities. S/he works collaboratively with other consortium partners and colleagues in AFSC across the region.
The position holder will provide technical assistance to program staff and CSOs in areas of advocacy, networking, research and convenings. S/he will contribute to the Salama Hub strategy ensuring clarity working towards AFSC’s overall goals of just and sustainable peace, just responses to forced displacement and migration and mainstreaming of climate justice, gender justice and youth. To this effect the American Friends Support Committee and Lutheran World Federation have partnered to implement a project entitled “A Local to Global Rights-Based Approach to empower displaced communities and their hosts in the East and Horn of Africa”. It is in this framework that the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Project Assistant (Intern) to join our team in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Summary of Responsibilities:
- The main purpose of the Project Assistant (Intern) is to support the work of AFSC and LWF in coordinating activities of advocacy, learnings, evidence generation and to inform engagement with the regional and international advocacy platforms including side events, and enable the network with other national, regional and global peacebuilding initiatives of the Salama Hub.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Assist with data collection and research for the project reports.
- Organize and maintain project files and documents.
- Prepare presentations and other materials.
- Liaise with project partners and stakeholders.
- Tracking and reporting on program progress and performance
- Maintaining and updating program records and documentation
- Providing support to program coordinator and other project stakeholders
- Assisting with the preparation of budgets and financial reports
- Working with team members to evaluate program effectiveness and suggest improvements.
- Helping to organize and facilitate meetings and special events.
- Ensure compliance with program policies and regulations.
Assignment length: One-year initial assignment with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding.

About You
Qualifications and Attributes:
- Minimum of a First Degree (University Bachelor) in a relevant field such as political science, gender studies, law, international relations/diplomacy, project management, and related fields
- Knowledge and exposures in the work of UN Agencies, IGAD, AU, local and international NGOs, or Civil society organizations,
- Minimal experience of working in human rights, advocacy and other right-based approaches
- Must have good communication skills including fluency in spoken and written English.
- Strong writing, presentation, and interpersonal skills required.
- Ability to develop collegial and professional relationships with various stakeholder groups.
- Willingness to learn, and desire to use this placement to further expand personal an
- Excellent facilitation, leadership, and networking skilled career developments in the field of peace, climate change, migration, women and youth inclusions and transitional justice
- A desire to grow the program as well as grow personally through the work.
- Ability to meet deadlines.
