Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia (HFE) is a world leading organization committed to the treatment and reintegration of patients suffering from Obstetric Fistula and the training and deployment of qualified midwives to prevent Obstetric Fistula and other childbirth injuries.

HFE which was established in 1974 G.C by Drs. Catherine and Reginald Hamlin has been caring for the women of Ethiopia for almost 60 years. Including our main Fistula Hospital in Addis Ababa we have 5 regional hospitals, rehabilitation and reintegration center and The Hamlin College of Midwives.

We deploy midwives into rural health centers across the country and provide mentoring and other support services to these facilities.

Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia, in collaboration with stakeholders, has implemented a program called Project Zero with the aim of eradicating obstetric fistula from Ethiopia. We already launched this program at some part of the country. We want also ensure this project in South Western Ethiopia Region, Bench Sheko Zone, Semen Bench Woreda The project work focus on identifying historic cases of obstetric fistula, and transferring to the Metu Hamlin fistula treatment center for treatment. And continue to implement quality interventions for the prevention of new obstetric fistula cases by building the capacity of the midwives working in the region’s health facilities and improving the service rendered to all pregnant mothers. For the successful implementation of the program, HFE needs to employ experienced candidate to be part of the program’s interventions, trainings, and mentorship in the areas as per the given job responsibilities.

Job Description

  • Assisting the project team leader with development of the M&E Plan for the project, including indicator selection, target setting, reporting, database management, and developing M&E and/ performance monitoring plans.
  • Lead role in overseeing data collection, collation, storage, analysis, and reporting, ensuring that data is of high quality and audit worthy.
  • Responsible for supporting the preparation and review of program reports in collaboration with program staff.
  • Manage research activities of the cohort and ensure outcomes and lessons learned are integrated into the project and shared with relevant stakeholders.
  • Provide training and mentoring to partners and staff to ensure the implementation of strong M&E systems.
  • Design and manage monitoring and database systems.
  • Communicating with relevant partners (from multiple sites) on data management to support smooth data collection and transfer of information.
  • Keeping a log (mapping) of research activities undertaken.
  • Supporting the coordination of data collection (tracking), including scheduling and undertaking field visits.
  • Performing quality checks on data, including data cleaning and verification of data
  • Managing research databases for the programs.
  • Processing data and providing information for reporting.
  • Ensures consistency of information in different reports.

Key competencies and professional expertise required:

  • Excellent skill of computer software packages; previous experience with District Health Information System (DHIS) database packages preferred.
  • Fluent in English, Amharic and other local languages and able to communicate with other local languages is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, intercultural communication skills, able to work well both within a team and independently under stressful conditions.
  • Proven clinical experience, working in the delivery of maternal, and child health service.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing service delivery protocols, norms and standards.

Job Purpose:

The Urogynecologist / Gynecologist will oversee advanced clinical services at the Mettu Hamlin Fistula Center, a specialized hospital dedicated to obstetric fistula and complex pelvic floor disorders. This position involves providing expert surgical care, mentoring junior clinicians, improving clinical protocols, and supporting Hamlin’s broader mission to eliminate obstetric fistula in Ethiopia.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct expert-level evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with obstetric fistula, urinary incontinence, genital prolapse, and other complex pelvic floor conditions
  • Perform major reconstructive pelvic surgeries, including advanced fistula repairs (VVF, RVF) and continence procedures
  • Lead clinical rounds, outpatient clinics, and surgical planning at Mettu Hamlin Fistula Center
  • Supervise and mentor junior physicians, surgical trainees, and visiting fellows in urogynecology and fistula repair
  • Oversee post-operative care, follow-up plans, and rehabilitation support, in collaboration with nursing and psychosocial staff
  • Ensure adherence to evidence-based surgical protocols, infection prevention, and patient safety standards
  • Contribute to surgical outcome reporting, audit, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Collaborate with other Hamlin Regional Centers, Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital, and the Hamlin College of Midwives for integrated patient care and training
  • Participate in community outreach and prevention programs in the surrounding Oromia region.

About You

Qualifications & Skills

Required Qualifications

  • MD degree in Medicine
  • Specialty in Obstetrics & Gynecology (MMed, OB-GYN or equivalent)
  • Subspecialty fellowship in Urogynecology or Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery
  • Valid license to practice in Ethiopia (or ability to obtain through the Ministry of Health)

Required Experience

  • At least 4 years of clinical experience in Obstetrics & Gynecology
  • 2 years of hands-on surgical experience in Urogynecology, including fistula repair and/or pelvic reconstructive procedures
  • Candidates with a Urogynecology subspecialty are highly encouraged to apply.
  • Previous leadership role in a clinical or surgical team preferred
  • Experience working in low-resource or rural settings is an asset
