Organizational Background

Ethiopian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ESOG) is a legally registered, autonomous, and not-for-profit professional society established in May 1992 and re-registered under the new civil society proclamation. ESOG operates in all regions of Ethiopia by using and works for the quality of OB-GYN education and care. ESOG has been a member of the East Central and Southern Africa College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ECSACOG) and the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO).

The vision of ESOG is to provide the highest possible standards of physical, mental, social, sexual and reproductive health and wellbeing with motivated, competent and compassionate care to each and every woman, newborn and family. Its mission is to promote and improve experiences of members and health outcomes for women, girls and couples through evidence-based care, enhanced clinical documentations, collection and analysis of data to support quality improvement for obstetric and gynecologic health

services with active participation of its members, broad national and international partnerships. ESOG’s primary goal is to support the improvement of standards, ethics and practices of maternal, newborn, sexual and reproductive health and rights through advocacy of evidence-based interventions and recommendations.

Position summary

The Executive Director, under the overall control of Executive Committee/Board of the Society, is responsible for the overall leadership, management and representation of the Society at national, regional and international levels. S/he is responsible in leading and coordinating the different units and programs in the Society. S/he is also responsible in developing and implementing strategies aiming to promote the organization’s mission and “voice”.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, leads, coordinates and controls the overall day-to-day operation/programs execution of the Society.
  • Prepares the strategic plan of the Society in consultation with the Executive Committee/Board and department managers.
  • Implements general policies established by the Executive Committee/Board; directs their administration and execution.
  • Designs medium- and short-term goals, programs, and strategies of the Society and presents to the Executive Committee/Board; make continuous follow up of their implementation after approval.
  • Creates active administration by developing specific operational policies and procedures, which are consistent with policies and directives issued by Executive Committee/Board and other supervising agencies.
  • Based on the approval by the Executive Committee/Board, recruits, selects, develop and dismiss heads and managers under his/her span of control.
  • In accordance with the Society’s human resource policy and relevant government rules and regulations, transfers, recruits, promotes, demotes, dismisses and gives prizes for employees of the Society.
  • Prepares the Society’s annual budget and presents it to the Executive Committee/Board for approval.
  • Ensures the existence and timely availability of the necessary quantity and quality of human resource, facilities, financial resources, etc. for the smooth functioning of the Society.
  • Corrects administrative problems, weaknesses, and malpractices and ensures the existence of appropriate authority and responsibility relationships and job distributions.
  • Reviews or studies (or engages consultants for doing a study on) the organizational structure, human resource plan, salary scale and employee benefits; presents improvements to the Executive Committee/Board and implements them upon approval.
  • Oversees the care and maintenance of all the Society’s physical assets and facilities; establishes strong internal control system; makes immediate and appropriate actions based on audit findings.
  • Fosters strategic alliance, partnerships and networking between ESOG, other professional societies/associations, local and international organizations and government organizations.
  • Strengthens external relationship and representation of the Society at national, regional and international levels.
  • Advocate for quality of OB-GYN and its sub-specialties education and care in Ethiopia and the placement of senior Society members at policy level.
  • Compiles relevant national statistics as regard to OB-GYN and sub-specialties training and services, outputs and deployment of members as well as attrition rates.
  • Takes part in the development of national guidelines in Ethiopia in relation to the OB-GYN and its sub-specialty profession.
  • Leads and take part at national level advocacy and policy dialogue on reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health.
  • Takes part in the development of the strategic plan of the Society, midterm review and end evaluation.
  • Leads the development of Data Base for all OB-GYNs, sub-specialists and OB-GYN residents in Ethiopia.
  • Designs grant proposals for international NGOs and government organizations.
  • Leads and coordinates the preparation of annual work plan and budgets.
  • Monitors the overall programs and projects of the organization in line with the tools and strategic plan.
  • Participates in the development of standards for monitoring the quality of teachers and the performance of preceptors.
  • Designs resource mobilization strategies for the Society and communicate potential partners nationally and internationally to strengthen the profession in Ethiopia.
  • Leads and coordinates in the development of publications in the Society.
  • Takes part and lead the information and knowledge sharing of good practice and lessons learnt for promoting maternal and newborn health programs.
  • Leads and coordinates the different units in the Society.
  • Ensures the design and implementation of capacity building work through trainings, education and mentorship.
  • Designs strategy for the continuous improvement, growth and expansion of the Society.
  • Ensures the accounting and internal control are performed in accordance with financial policy of the Society; all properties are registered; periodic counts are performed and reports are produced; annual financial statements are produced.
  • Delegates the necessary authorities to the appropriate managers.
  • Ensures the services provided by the Society fulfill the member’s requirements.
  • Opens and operates bank accounts of the Society with the President and Treasurer of the Society.
  • Represents the Society before any third party or court or appoints an attorney when the President of the Society delegates her/him.
  • Submits periodical reports to the Executive Committee/Board on the overall operations of the Society; and
  • Undertakes any other activities assigned by the Executive Committee/Board of the Society and carry out the activities incidental to the above.

Technical skills

  • Knowledge and experience of Program/Project Management, M&E, Budget Management.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience of managing grants of multiple funding organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience of management of large-scale programs and projects.
  • Proven ability to lead, coordinate, manage and evaluate program performance.
  • Strong understanding of the Ethiopian Health system, cultural diversity and cross-cultural responses.
  • Experience in designing researchable areas, study protocol preparation, M&E, analysis, preferably in the health sector.
  • Excellent writing, editorial, and communication skills, including strong presentation skills to report results to major donors, national and international partners.
  • Broad knowledge of maternal health issues and polices in Ethiopia.
  • Knowledge of MS Project software.
  • Being an OB-GYN and a member of the Society.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English.
  • Being able to communicate with more than one local language is a plus.

About You

Job Requirements

Education:

  • MD + OB-GYN specialty (MPH is a plus) OR MD + PhD/MPH OR PhD in other Health fields, Business administration, Development Studies.

Experience:

    • For MD + OB-GYN specialty (+/- MPH): Any level of experience.
    • For MD + PhD/MPH: At least eight years of experience with four of which should be in managerial position(s).
    • For PhD in other Health fields, Business Administration, Development Studies: At least ten years of experience with five of which should be in managerial position(s).
    • Experience in I/NGO environment or working in donor-based systems are advantageous. Extensive knowledge and experience in managing partnership and grants from different donors and government organizations like MoH and regional health bureaus is beneficial.
