The Project

Within the GIZ Program Special Initiative ” Decent Work for a Just Transition “, sequa implements the “SME Support Scheme Tourism” project in the Arba Minch area in Ethiopia. With this, sequa aims to facilitate capacity building and enhancing the job quality and creating new jobs at Ethiopian tourism sector service providers by increasing their competitiveness and quality service so that their services will satisfy the demand on local and international markets.

Benefiting companies and professional individuals receive flexible and demand-oriented funding (consulting and technical training on areas of different section of the general topics of capacity building. A special focus will be on Leadership Training to improve existing services in the market.

sequa has selected Simien Eco Tours through a vetting process. Simien Eco Tours PLC was founded in 2014 and conducts tour operator services with international partners, specialized hiking, biking adventure and sustainable tours with the importance of customer satisfaction. Additionally, Simien Eco Tours PLC operates individual tours, trekking tours, mountain biking, E-bikes, paragliding, rafting, flight and hotel reservation, car rental stopover and MICE.

The objective of this assignment is to capacitate the bike guides to be able to have the knowledge, to manage the maintenance problem in bikes while on the road with clients as well as in the workshop in Addis Ababa. The aim is to enhance and improve their function that goes beyond just repairing bikes—they are responsible for teaching others how to understand, maintain, and repair bicycles capacity of the existing capacity of bikes on the road, ensuring greater efficiency and effectiveness within in house talent.

Your Tasks / Responsibilities

1. Deliver Hands-On Training

• Teach the 3 to 4 trainees how to repair, service, and maintain different types of bicycles.
• Demonstrate use of tools, parts, and equipment.
• Guide students to perform practical repair tasks safely and correctly.

2. Develop Training Materials and Assess Trainee Performance

• Create manuals, lesson plans, presentations, and visual aids.
• Explain toolkits and bike parts needed for training.
• Design training modules for various skill levels (beginner to advanced).
• Monitor and evaluate trainee progress through tests, practical tasks, or observation and provide constructive feedback and additional support where needed.

3. Maintain Workshop and Equipment

• Ensure tools, bikes, and workstations are clean, safe, and functional.
• Perform regular checks and maintenance of training equipment.
• Keep knowledge current with new bicycle technologies, tools, and repair methods.

4. Promote Safety and Best Practices

• Teach proper safety procedures when using tools and handling bikes.
• Emphasize personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe workshop conduct.

Educational Background:

• High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred.
• Vocational or technical training in bicycle mechanics is highly preferred.
• Certification in bike maintenance or repair (e.g., from a recognized bike mechanic school or training program) is highly preferred.

Your Working Experience

• 2–5 years of hands-on experience as a bicycle technician or mechanic. Prior experience training or mentoring others is a strong advantage, as well as any previous experience with E-Bikes.
• Excellent knowledge of bike systems, components, and tools and have the ability to teach and explain technical concepts clearly in English or Amharic language.
• Strong manual dexterity and attention to detail and good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Patience and ability to work with learners of different skill levels and time management and organizational skills.
