The project Strengthening Rural Value Chains II (SRVC II) is a bilateral project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by GIZ in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture of the Federal Republic of Ethiopia. This three-year project (2025-2027) builds on and expands the preceding project SRVC (2021-2024).
The SRVC II project is a comprehensive agricultural value chain development (VCD) project, working along selected agricultural value chains in the horticulture and oilseeds sub-sectors. The project aims to strengthen private sector development, supply chain management and post-harvest management. It works with various public and private partners, including agricultural input and service providers, agricultural producers and processors as well as business associations to foster public-private collaboration and dialogue (PPD). In addition to and beyond selected value chains, the project aims to support federal partners with agricultural policy development and inter-sectoral coordination for Ethiopia’s agricultural sector to fulfill its potential to provide food security, employment and supply high quality food to local and international markets.
In addition to the above, the SRVC II project is applying for EU co-financing to support coffee VCD in Ethiopia, to be implemented jointly with Spain and Italy within a Multi-Partner Contribution Agreement (MPCA). This three-year project will be implemented from early 2026 and focus on coffee VCD and EUDR compliance, aiming for Ethiopian coffee producers and exporters to reach EU markets. For the development and operation of this project, this advertisement seeks a senior Ethiopian coffee expert with extensive technical skills and work experience with Ethiopian and international private sector actors. This position is initially for 12 months but can be extended once funding is secured.
Responsibilities
- Support proposal and project development on coffee VCD
- Support both public and private actors towards improving coffee production, Post Harvest Management, and processing.
- Support policy development for coffee VCD, including for processing, trading, quality standards and trade.
- Support the development of PPPs with private sector actors
- Support the development and implementation of capacity development measures for selected partners and actors.
Contribute to overall SRVC II project implementation, event organization, knowledge management and M&E, as needed
About You
Qualifications
- Masters degree from a recognized university in the field of Economics, Policy, Business Administration, Agriculture or another relevant field.
- Experience in international support for Ethiopia’s coffee sector
- At least 5 years’ experience in senior level management or technical advising position in coffee or agricultural development.
- Fully fluent in Amharic and English language, both orally and in writing.
Other Knowledge, additional competencies
- Extensive technical knowledge and work experience in coffee VCD in Ethiopia and abroad.
- Experience with EU-funded and GIZ-implemented projects is highly desirable.
- Work experience with international organizations for technical cooperation in Ethiopia.
- Experience on coordination of different international stakeholders and development partners
- Experience in supporting business development and product promotion in the agricultural or coffee sector.
