Mission and objectives

UNDP works in about 170 countries and territories, helping to eradicate poverty, reduce inequalities and exclusion, and build resilience so countries can sustain progress. As the UN’s development agency, UNDP plays a critical role in helping countries achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

Context

This assignment is part of the Agenda 2063 Academy — a flagship initiative of the African Union Commission (AUC) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), designed to accelerate implementation of the Second Ten-Year Implementation Plan (STYIP) of Agenda 2063. This is a joint initiative of the two institutions within the framework of the MOU signed in fullfillment of the African Union Executive Council Decision 998(XXX). The traineeship is anchored in a catalytic question: Is Agenda 2063 truly driving conversations and decisions where it matters — from Cabinets to Councils to Boardrooms? Participants will explore this question practically through development plans, budgets, and results frameworks from real African countries and institutions. Volunteers will produce original diagnostics and knowledge contributions that inform leadership decisions across the AU, Member States, RECs, private sector, and UN partners. Outstanding work may be featured in the Agenda 2063 Academy Knowledge Repository, shaping the future of Africa’s planning ecosystem. This programme is jointly coordinated by the AUC and UNDP.

Task description

Selected online volunteers will participate in a 12-week remote, mentored work experience as part of the Agenda 2063 Traineeship Programme starting 4 August 2025. Volunteers will:

• Be assigned a real African country, local authority, or power space case.

• Draft a diagnostic note and contribute a knowledge product.

• Participate in weekly virtual sessions (live or recorded), peer-learning exchanges, and mentorship check-ins.
