Job Description
Background
Network of Ethiopian Women’s Associations (NEWA) is one of the pioneer national civil society networks in Ethiopia working for the respect of women’s political, economic, social, and legal rights. Currently, NEWA has 50 member associations/organizations operating all over the country whose primary objective is creating an enabling environment for the empowerment of Ethiopian women and girls. Its member associations/organizations aim to advance women’s rights, gender equality, and women’s empowerment in Ethiopia. NEWA has experience in leading women’s rights issues in the country through advocacy, research, capacity building, and monitoring government compliance with Gender Equality. As a network organization, NEWA has been advocating for the development and proper implementation of gender-sensitive policies, laws, and programs at the national and regional levels.
NEWA has been contributing a lot and still keeps mobilizing its constituencies and works in collaboration and coordination with stakeholders. NEWA as a national network envisions rebuilding/strengthening its own and its members’ internal technical and institutional capabilities and revitalizing internal systems to effectively and efficiently implement projects. Starting from the project design to its implementation and monitoring the performance of member organizations, NEWA plays a major role.
To enhance women’s political participation, NEWA has organized various capacity-building trainings and workshops for women’s political candidates and political party leaders, launched civic education with CSOs, women’s associations, and university students lobbied for the amendment of electoral legal provisions in relation to women candidates, and launched media campaigns to change the societal attitude towards women in leadership.
Currently, NEWA is executing a project funded by Political Parties of Finland for Democracy- Demo Finland entitled “Inclusive Women’s Political Participation in Ethiopia”. This project has been implemented in Oromia, Benshangul Gumuz Regional States, and Addis Ababa (with national political parties). The overall objective of this project is political structures consider and take further measures to increase diversity in political participation, particularly the share of women and persons with disabilities. To achieve this, Demo Finland together with NEWA works to strengthen inclusive multi-party democracy in Ethiopia with the following intermediate outcomes.
Intermediate outcome 1: Women’s participation in key decision-making positions including political party structures, regional councils and HoPR is enhanced
Intermediate outcome 2: Political arenas are more accessible for persons with disabilities
Therefore, this assignment is given to shed some light on the stated long-term and intermediate outcomes of the project. Accordingly, NEWA is looking to engage a facilitator/trainer to provide a capacity building training on Inclusive Communication, public Speaking Skills, and Media Engagement for Women Politicians. The participants will be drawn from various political parties operating in Oromia region.
The objective of the Assignment
The general objective of this assignment is to prepare a concise and comprehensive PowerPoint presentation, present it to the audience, and facilitate discussions on the Iinclusive Communication, Public Speaking Skills and to Develop Media Engagement Techniques and Strategies. Whereas the specific objectives of the training are:
- Enhance participants’ inclusive communication skills by understanding the social norms, and political culture of Ethiopia.
- Know and eliminate using derogatory words for persons with disabilities during the day-to-day political life.
- Equip participants with in-depth knowledge of public speaking skills to effectively communicate and influence politicians and the community at large.
- Develop media engagement techniques and strategies
Scope of the Assignment
The main purpose of this assignment is to aware women politicians on Inclusive Communication, Public Speaking and media engagement. The training will eenhance the skills of women politicians’ inclusive communication and public speaking skills to influence the community and strengthen effective media engagement to address the issues of women and persons with disabilities in the political process of Ethiopia.
The training is expected to be given in Adama, for women politicians. This training will be organized for two full days. The participants of this training will be forty Women politicians drawn from all political parties operating Oromia region.
Training Methodology
- The methodology should be more participatory, interactive, practical and based on agreed training materials and tools,
- It is expected to include a presentation, individual and group discussions and practical role play.
- Practical exercise on inclusive communication, public speaking skills and media engagement techniques.
Roles of the consultant/trainer
Under the Supervision and in close cooperation with NEWA team, the consultant/trainer will implement the following tasks:
- Develop enabling training methodology, activities, and training schedule, and submit to NEWA for review, feedback and approval.
- Finalize training methodology and training schedule,
- Develop training material/presentation of the training,
- Facilitate/train two -day capacity building training for targets,
- Design and conduct an evaluation of the training (pre and post-test evaluation),
- Prepare and submit Post Training report.
Participants of the training
The participants of the training will be 40 women political party leaders and members of Oromia region.
Duration and place of the Training
The training will be conducted at Adama town for two days i.e. from 7-8 August 2025.
Deliverables
- A detailed work plan and roadmap for the development of training including training strategy (inception report),
- Training materials: key training materials in English and Amharic for the trainers/ facilitators including PowerPoint presentations, assignments, handouts, etc.
- Successful delivery two-days capacity building training,
- Final report after the completion of the two-days training.
About You
The Consultant/Trainer must be:
- a Senior Expert in leading and undertaking trainings, particularly for political party leaders, women’s and persons with disabilities including on inclusive communication, public speaking and media engagement, political leadership and gender equality, etc.
- Practical training experience in inclusive communication, public speaking skills, and media engagement and having a TOT certificate on the assignment or testimonial on similar assignments,
- Know the concepts of disability, UN CRPD, and derogatory words on disability,
- The Lead consultant should hold a minimum of a Master’s degree in Journalism and/or communication, public administration, management, political science, social work, Gender studies, or related subjects and practical knowledge of the Ethiopian political arena.
Qualifications must include:
- A minimum of 5+ years in providing pieces of training mainly on inclusive communication and public speaking skills and media engagement,
- Experience in working with women and their networks,
- Experience in developing participatory training tools,
- Proven ability to work with politicians such as women and persons with disabilities,
- Excellent English and Amharic writing skills are required,
- Experience in producing the post-training report,
- Understanding of gender, disability, and media, and the practical application of this to women’s and persons with disabilities lived realities.
