01. Medical Laboratory Technician/Technologist
Job Title: Medical Laboratory Technician/Technologist

The Medical Technologist (MT)/Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) perform routine and complex analytical tests on human body fluids and tissues to provide accurate data to the health care team for optimal diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of disease states. The MT/MLT is capable of performing all of the tests in a single section or most of the tests in all clinical laboratory sections: bacteriology, immunohematology, chemistry, hematology, parasitology, serology and urinalysis. Performs required duties at a high level, with minimal orientation.
Job Knowledge / Responsibilities:
General Duties
- Performs a variety of technical laboratory procedures according to Medical Center standard operating procedure manuals, and national standards to obtain patient specimens using to ensure specimen quality used to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
- Specimens are checked as to their condition, acceptability and appropriateness to the test and exceptions are noted.
- Adheres to quality assurance and quality control procedures in performing all testing.
- Conducts chemical analysis of body fluids including blood urine, spinal fluid, to determine presence or absence of normal and abnormal components.
- Correlates clinical information and/or previous lab results and reports discrepancies to supervisors and other appropriate personnel.
- Collects and directs the collection of specimens with rigid attention to proper patient identification, priority status and hospital and laboratory safety and infection control policies for clinical testing and data entry to LIS (lab, information system).
- Work pending is organized and appropriately left for follow up.
- All critical values are reported promptly to the physician and charge nurse.
- Morning tests results are completed and delivered to the floor by 11.00am.
- Maintains and operates lab equipment; able to detect malfunctions as they occur by review of instruments results. Troubleshoots the problem with technologist or service representative assistance.
- Performs required preventative maintenance procedures in laboratory instrumentation.
- Participates in developmental work on new tests
- Participates in QC testing of lab reagents and maintenance of equipment. Follows protocol for running and documenting control values. Collects, evaluates, and reports quality management data in order to monitor and improve laboratory performance.
- Does not report patient results unless quality control data are within accepted parameters. Recognizes out of control values, takes corrective action, and notifies others of changes.
- Writes and updates laboratory procedures under supervision as required.
- Shares call duty and works different shifts as required. Must be able to work extended hours when necessary.
- Keeps an adequate supply of working materials on hand.

- Ability to relate to the public regardless of ethnic, religion and economic status.

Qualifications:
Education
- Bachelor degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited program
Licensure/ Certification
- Licensed to practice in Ethiopia by FMHACA.
- Current and active certification from the FMHACA Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT)
- Able to perform BLS / CPR
- Able to meet the physical requirements of the position
