Job Position: Junior Engineer-Construction Project Operations
Reports To: Senior Consultant Engineer
Location: 70% Field Deployment (Various Project Sites across Ethiopia), 30% Head Office (Good Neighbors Ethiopia, Addis Ababa)

Term of Employment: For a contract of six (6) months, with the possibility of extension based on satisfactory performance.
Job Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and adaptable Junior Engineer with a Civil Engineering background to provide crucial technical support & field report to our Senior Consultant Engineer. This role is fundamentally field-based, requiring extensive travel and presence at project sites across Ethiopia (approximately 70% of the time). You will be actively involved in the design, planning, and follow-up phases of community infrastructure projects, utilizing engineering software, conducting site assessments, monitoring construction, and ensuring project implementation aligns with technical specifications and GN Ethiopia’s standards. The remaining 30% of work will be based at the Addis Ababa Head Office for reporting, coordination, and design work.
About You
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Design & Planning Support:
- Assist the Senior Consultant Engineer in developing engineering designs, drawings, plans, and specifications for civil engineering projects (e.g., water systems, sanitation facilities, school structures, small bridges, community buildings).
- Utilize engineering design software proficiently (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D or similar) to create and modify technical drawings under supervision.
- Perform basic engineering calculations and analysis as directed.
- Support the preparation of Bill of Quantities (BOQs), cost estimates, and tender document
- Project Site Implementation & Follow-up (Primary Focus):
- Spend approximately 70% of working time stationed at various project sites across Ethiopia.
- Conduct regular site visits and inspections to monitor construction progress, quality of work, and adherence to approved designs, specifications, schedules, and safety standards.
- Assist in supervising contractors and laborers on-site.
- Identify and report any technical issues, discrepancies, or potential risks encountered during construction to the Senior Consultant Engineer promptly.
- Assist in verifying work done and preparing progress reports.
- Support quality control and quality assurance processes on-site.
- Assist with site measurements and as-built documentation.
- Site Assessment & Surveying:
- Participate in initial site assessments and feasibility studies.
- Assist with basic topographical surveys and data collection under guidance.
- Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date site records, daily logs, inspection reports, and photographic documentation.
- Assist in preparing regular field progress reports for the Senior Consultant Engineer and Head Office.
- Contribute to the preparation of project completion reports and as-built drawings.
- Coordination & Communication:
- Liaise effectively with community representatives, local authorities, contractors, and other stakeholders at the field level under the guidance of the Senior Consultant Engineer and concerned department Managers.
- Communicate clearly and regularly with the Senior Consultant Engineer and Head Office team regarding project status and challenges.
- Participate in site meetings as required.
- Compliance & Safety:
- Ensure all site activities comply with GN Ethiopia policies, donor requirements, national building codes, and relevant Ethiopian regulations.
- Promote and adhere to strict health and safety protocols on all project sites.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree (B.Sc.) in Civil Engineering, Construction Technology and Management or related from a recognized university.
- Experience: 2-3 years of relevant experience in civil engineering design, site supervision, or project implementation.
- Technical Skills:
- Mandatory: Proficient in using AutoCAD. Familiarity with other civil engineering design software (e.g., civil 3D, ETABS, structural analysis software) is a significant advantage.
- Strong understanding of civil engineering principles and practices.
- Basic surveying skills and ability to interpret survey data.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
- Competence in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Field Work Requirement: Demonstrated ability and willingness to live and work extensively (approx. 70% of time) in remote or semi-urban project sites across Ethiopia, often in challenging conditions and Travel is mandatory.
Language:
- Fluency in English is mandatory
- Amharic and other local languages are asset.
Desirable Skills & Attributes

- Basic knowledge of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) infrastructure.
- Familiarity with construction materials and methods common in Ethiopia.

Working Conditions
- This is a highly field-based position. The successful candidate must be prepared for extensive travel and prolonged stays (weeks/months) at project sites across Ethiopia.
