The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) wants to recruit employees in the following vacant positions of Public Health Officer.
About the Ethiopian Red Cross Society
The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) was established in 1935 and is one of the oldest and largest humanitarian organizations in Ethiopia. ERCS provides services to communities affected by natural and manmade disasters through the provision of emergency responses, ambulance and first aid, family reunification, essential drugs, water and sanitation, and other humanitarian services. ERCS also runs disaster risk reduction programs with the aim of creating resilience households and communities. Currently the ERCS has a structure consisting of 15 Regional Offices, Zonal Branches and District/Woreda Branches, Woreda Red Cross Committee and Kebele Red Cross committees.
ERCS also runs disaster risk reduction programs relating to food security, climate change adaptation, livelihood diversification, and institutional capacity building interventions, with the aim of creating resilience households and communities. ERCS works in partnership with the Ethiopian Government, International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC), International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), partnering National Societies, members, volunteers and the communities we serve.
Details of the vacant position
Job Title: Public Health Officer
- Work Unit: Health and WASH Division
- Reports to: Health and WaSH coordinator
- Terms of employment: 9 months’ contract with possible extension
- Place of Work: Addis Ababa
- Salary: Negotiable
II. Job Summary
The Public Health Officer will support the implementation of public health and WASH interventions under the EC2R Project. The role includes planning, coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating health-related activities and ensuring that quality standards are met. The officer will provide technical support in public health components, particularly hygiene promotion and health education, and assist in data management and reporting.
Key performance area
Program Planning & Implementation
- Assist in the development and implementation of public health activities as part of the EC2R project.
- Contribute to health needs assessments and data analysis.
- Ensure community engagement and participation in all phases of the project.
- Conduct public health risk assessments and support hygiene promotion interventions.
- Coordinate training of community health volunteers and local actors in health and hygiene.
- Prepare activity plans, budgets, and work schedules in collaboration with project staff.
- Support the integration of public health and WASH programming.
Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting
- Develop and implement monitoring tools to track project performance and health outcomes.
- Regularly collect and analyze data from the field and generate reports.
- Conduct field visits to monitor project implementation and provide feedback.
- Support the documentation of lessons learned and best practices.
- Assist in writing quality weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports for submission to the Health and WASH Division and partners.
Technical Support
- Provide technical guidance to branch-level staff and volunteers on public health issues.
- Promote evidence-based approaches and public health standards in line with national and international guidelines.
- Support cross-cutting themes like gender, inclusion, protection, and community accountability in all public health activities.
Coordination and Stakeholder Engagement
- Collaborate with local authorities, government health offices, WASH and Health Clusters, NGOs, and community-based organizations.
- Participate in technical working groups and coordination forums as needed.
About You
Qualification Requirements:
- MSc/BSc in Public Health, Environmental Health, Health Education, or a related field.
- Minimum of 4/6 years of experience in public health programming, particularly in emergency or development contexts.
- Experience working in the NGO sector and knowledge of the Red Cross Movement is an asset.
