Job Description

Introduction

The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is a Swiss-based foundation launched at the United Nations in 2002 to tackle the human suffering caused by malnutrition. Working with governments, businesses, and civil society, we aim to transform food systems so that they deliver more nutritious foods for all people, especially the most vulnerable.

Background

GAIN contributes to the fight against malnutrition in Ethiopia by implementing innovative and sustainable models that improve access to safe, affordable, and nutritious foods for communities vulnerable to malnutrition. One of GAIN’s ongoing initiatives in Ethiopia is the “Economic Growth Through Fruit Transformation” project. This initiative focuses on developing safe and nutritious fruit products, with a particular emphasis on papaya processing, especially drying techniques.

The project is implemented in collaboration with various partners from the private and public sectors, including academic and research institutions. It aims to develop innovative models across the fruit processing value chain and enhance marketing strategies for processed products. These efforts are targeted toward the future delivery of safe, affordable, and nutritious products to vulnerable communities and beyond thereby contributing to both nutritional and economic outcomes. To ensure the achievement of expected results, the project tests, pilots, and demonstrates multiple innovative models across the fruit value chain in close collaboration with value chain actors at different levels. The results from the models lay the groundwork for further scaling efforts.

Throughout the implementation process, we identified key learnings, best practices, opportunities, and challenges across the fruit value chain, focusing on the thematic areas including:

  • Agro-processing,
  • Market access and demand generation,
  • Enabling environment creation and
  • Capacity building and skills transfer to ensure long-term sustainability.
