Organizational Profile:
MERSA Media Institute (MMI) is a nonprofit media policy think tank. We work to help create vibrant, responsible, and independent media institutions, professional unions, and education centers through research, capacity building, and institutional support in Ethiopia.
Background:
Ethiopian journalists in the 2020s: Who they are, how they work, and what they think report is a research effort examining journalism practices and perspectives across Ethiopia. With data collected from journalists across several Ethiopian cities and regions, the report provides a robust snapshot of the state of journalism in Ethiopia as of 2023–2024, covering demographics, safety, autonomy, political influence, gender, professional roles, and media freedom.
Position Summary:
The reflection presenter is expected to synthesize and reflect on key insights, implications, and questions arising from the findings, particularly as they relate to the current Ethiopian media landscape. This presentation is not a summary of the report, but a personal and/or professional reflection that can open up dialogue and invite further analysis.
The presentation will be delivered in person during the official report launch event scheduled for August 26, 2025, in Addis Ababa. Venue details will be communicated in advance.
Scope of Work / Major Duties and Responsibilities:
The reflection presenter shall:
- Engage with the report’s findings by reading the full document in advance of the event, and identify themes that resonate with their experience, expertise, or area of concern.
- Present a 10-minute reflection that provides a thoughtful interpretation of the findings and its relevance to the current media environment and critical questions for journalists, media institutions, civil society, and policymakers.
- Use the reflection to encourage deeper conversation, critical engagement, or action-oriented thinking among stakeholders.
Selection Criteria
The ideal presenter will:
- Be a practicing journalist, scholar, editor, or media rights advocate with experience in or knowledge of the Ethiopian media context.
- Must be available to attend and present in person at the report dissemination event on August 26, 2025.
- Demonstrate strong critical thinking and public speaking skills.
- Be able to link personal or professional experiences to the report’s broader implications.
Deliverables:
- A prepared 10-minute spoken reflection
- Optional: visual slides (max 3) or key points for projection (if needed).
