Job Description

Operation Smile is an international not-for-profit organization that offers free surgeries to people born with cleft conditions. We envision a world in which health and dignity are improved through safe surgery. Founded in 1982, Operation Smile has had its presence in Ethiopia since 2005 partnering with Jimma University Medical Centre, St Paul Millennium Medical College and Ayder Comprehensive Specialized hospital with the aim of expanding to more hospitals in the future. Operation Smile Ethiopia (OSE) office is looking for a qualified Engineer who will render service for short term in leading the renovation of rooms for Cleft surgical areas in Ayder Comprehensive Specialized hospital. position reports to Country Manager of OSE and will be available for 3-4 months.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Based in Mekele, under the supervision and guidance of OSE staff and close working relationship with Ayder staff, responsible for overall planning and executing the renovation works of cleft surgical related spaces at Ayder Comprehensive Specialized hospital
  • Lead the preparation of detailed bill of quantities; submit to OSE and Ayder staff for review and approval.
  •  Identify appropriate human resources /professionals and labors that are required for the renovation works and timely deploy to do the renovation and maintenance activities at the hospital
  • Closely work with OSE and Ayder team in procurement of items that are required for the renovation works
  • Together with the OSE and Ayder staff, lead the preparation of detailed action plan for the renovation work at Ayder and lead the execution of the activities as per the timeline
  • Prepare contracts for each professional that engage in the different elements of renovation works such as partition, floor, ceiling, electricity, sanitation, construction of toilet and others.
  •  Supervise the renovation activities on daily basis, identify any issues that need further actions and report to the supervisor on time
  • Closely work with Country Manager, Intern of OSE based in Ayder, Procurement Officer of OSE, Finance and Operation Manager and other staff of OSE as well as facility teams and Management of Ayder Comprehensive Specialized hospital.
  •  Execute any other activities assigned by immediate supervisor

 

Requirements

  • Minimum of BA degree in  civil engineering from recognized university or college
  • At least 3-5 years of work experience in leading construction, maintenance and renovation of buildings and related infrastructures such as health facilities, schools or any other similar infrastructures
  • Knowledge and experience of project management in construction is highly required
  •  Experience and skill in preparing detailed bill of quantities and its execution
  • Experience of recruiting necessary human resources and labors; deploying them to the work and supervising on daily basis for construction or renovation/maintenance activities
  •  Experience and knowledge of teamwork and coordination of large team members is highly required
  • High communication skill using both writing and oral is mandatory
  • Knowledge of English, Amharic and Tigrigna languages is required.
  •  Basic knowledge and skill of computer including Microsoft offices such as use of words, excel, internet, teams.
  • Willing to work extra hours  ;with flexibility of working out of regular work hours.
